Electric rate caps in Pennsylvania expire for PPL customer January 1, 2010 and for Met-Ed, PECO, and Pennelec customers January 1, 2011. While the electric generation market prices are volatile, they have increased significantly since the rate caps were put in place in 1997.

Electricity/Energy (Fourth Quarter 2009)

Energy commodity prices continue their volatile trends of the past couple years. We continue to enjoy relatively low market prices compared to the highs of summer 2008. Crude oil has been trading in the $70 to $80 range, most recently toward the higher end. Natural gas prices rose during December due to colder winter weather and are now trading around $6.00.

Natural Gas (Fourth Quarter 2009)

Two years ago in December, future prices for gas on Nymex started moving up and didn’t stop before the prompt month broke through $14/dth the following July. Those who gave up waiting for a turnaround and locked the next winter prices near the top vowed never to wait that long again. Then one year ago in December they cautiously locked the following winter, but Nymex prices started a 12-month slide with the prompt month reaching another low at $4.50 early this month.
